Who are The Nook Charities and what services does it provide to their community? The Nook Charities is a non- profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of living for
people through the act of social service and/or charitable giving. It does so by either hosting
service projects or partnering with established civic/community programs that encourage a positive change in the lives of their serving community.
How long have you been involved? What brought you into this line of work? The Nook Charities has been established for nearly two years and has been providing monetary charitable contributions for the past year and a half (at the time of this writing). The way I (Lynette Marshall - Founder/President) became involved is through my counseling career, which stemmed from working at mostly non-profit agencies and having the opportunity to work behind the scenes of their outreach projects and see the impact it has on changing people and their community for the better.
What’s the philosophy behind The Nook Charities? The Nook Charities respectfully support community agencies whose service(s) empower people who are actively taking steps to improve the quality of their living. In a previous article for The Nook Counseling Services, I mentioned that my clients are leaders, because for most they are forging a new path that involves breaking unhealthy cycles that are modeled to their families and those around them to help improve their overall functioning. Still, with an understanding that hardship occurs to everyone, but can seem defeating for those attempting to change the trajectory of their life’s course, The Nook Charities partners with identified civic/community agencies to provide as it name’s sake suggests, a (brief) recess, or break from their challenges, to help their serving population sustain strength to endure and overcome their presenting hardship.
What is your biggest inspiration for The Nook Charities? What do you enjoy most about your work? Watching people take the initiative to improve their quality of living. Rather it’s becoming mindful of what you say about yourself and/or learning a trade to improve your financial health; the first step to better is usually small, but it is tremendous in being the ripple effect to greater change.
Do you have a special message to share with the community? When it comes to being charitable, we often think of monetary gifting or social services, but providing encouragement, having a kind and positive attitude are expressions of charity that helps those who (and we all are) in the process of “getting better.” So be gracious and practice patience towards yourself and others. When we do so, it helps to create a better quality of living for our neighborhoods/communities.
